Suches Fire Department plans Chili Supper, Florida Vacation Raffle Drawing

How about some more chili? Need another piece of cornbread? Got enough tea? These questions mixed in with the sounds of conversations between friends and neighbors will be heard on Saturday, April 14th at 6:00 P.M. in the Suches Fire station as members and the community gather to break bread , share fellowship, celebrate (and help pay for) the new engine which will be on display for all to see.

The event is both a fundraiser and a celebration of the delivery of the first new class A engine ever to a volunteer station in the county. The cost of this apparatus is being covered by money commitments from the department and all its members, generous contributions from individuals and businesses in Suches and the surrounding area and a huge hand by the Union Countygovernment. We hope the vacation raffle and the chili supper will put us over the top on the engine part of the Capital Fund Drivenow underway. With that out of the way, we can then work on the second phase of the campaign which will result in the purchase of a 2,000 gallon pumper/tanker later in the year.

The fire department and the people in Suches have long had a relationship where community support of the department has enabled and encouraged the membership to a greater commitment to protect and serve the community. The departments need for, and community response to the current capital fund campaign is the latest example of this partnership. Not only that, but we all seem to enjoy getting together from time to time. Won?t you join us?

The two fire stations in Suches are a part of the countywide fire department which consists of the paid headquarters station in Blairsville and a dozen volunteer stations in five districts throughout the county. The career and volunteer firefighters and first responders throughout this system are dedicated to the protection of life and property of Union County residents and visitors alike. If you are interested in sharing this rewarding service, contact the department at (706)439- 6095 and you will be put in touch with representatives of the district and station that serve where you live. For Suches, call (706)747-5741 and leave a message. It is important to know that there are volunteer opportunities at several levels ? you do not have to be interested in going into burning buildings to participate and serve. Firefighting involves much more than that. There are important support activities, both on fire scenes and at the stations, which can be tailored to most degrees of abilities and availabilities. The success of the entire Union County Fire Department depends on not only the combined efforts of the paid and volunteer members currently in the department but on the continued involvement of the community as a whole. There are opportunities for rewarding service and fellowship in the Union County Fire Department.
