White Cane Weekend in Blairsville coming up "The gift of sight is a precious treasure for a needy person to receive, and yet so easy to give for people who donate to the Lions White Cane," says Ken R. Castle, President of the Union County Lions Club, in announcing that Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21 will be observed as White Cane Weekend in Blairsville. "Our 2007 White Cane goal is $175,000," said Lion C.J. Coefield Jr., Fundraising Chairman of the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation. Mr. Coefield adds, "For every $1 contributed to the Lighthouse, we receive approximately $4 in discounted and donated services from over 300 vision care providers across the state of Georgia. Because of the tremendous discounts, the 2007 goal will provide over $1,000,000 worth of eye surgeries, other vision care services, and hearing aids to Georgians who have no insurance or other financial means." Each person who makes a donation will receive a White Cane lapel emblem to symbolize their concern for the sight of those less fortunate. The Union County Lions Club members will be at several locations on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21 accepting cash donations as well as used eyeglasses, hearing aids, and cell phones. Those locations are BI-LO, Cobb's Mill Restaurant, CVS, Ingle's, Mike's Seafood, Sawmill Restaurant, United Community Bank, and Waffle House. |
