Three Mountain Area Christian Academy students recently were named as Chapter Winners in the Old Unicoi Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution's annual American History and Christopher Columbus Essay contest. A total of 147 essays from seventeen public, Christian, and home schools in Fannin,
Towns, and Union Counties were submitted.
Carly Murphy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Murphy of Blue Ridge was the 7th grade winner. The eighth grade winner was Grace Patterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Patterson of Blairsville. These students were given the assignment of writing a letter to relatives in England describing life in Jamestown, Virginia.
The winner of the Christopher Columbus Contest was Laura Kelly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Kelly of Blairsville. Laura's assignment was to be either a sailor, rat, or Queen Isabella during Columbus' voyage to the new world.
These winners with their parents and teachers will be honored at the DAR's School Awards Program in May.
The winning essays were forwarded to District competition. Grace Patterson's entry has won at this level and has been forwarded to the State. If she were to win at the State level, her essay would be forwarded to the National competition.
