John Huston to perform at YHC
John Huston has been hailed as "…one of the finest young guitarists today," by The Southern Arts Foundation, "a formidable talent" by Guitart International, and La Stampa calls his playing "…mesmerizing." Accolades for Huston's performances are numerous. He won First Prize in the 2001 Aranjuez Strings International Guitar Competition and was a top prize winner in competitions including the Concours International de Guitare de Lachine, the American String Teachers Association National Guitar Competition, the National Federation of Music Clubs Guitar Competition, and the East Carolina University National Guitar Competition. He has also been chosen twice as recitalist at the conclusion of the annual Christopher Parkening Master Class in Bozeman Montana. Huston has proven himself to be a versatile musician, effortlessly presenting programs that bring together the lyricism of the classical era with the passion of the Argentine tango, the complexity of baroque counterpoint, with the aggression and innovation of contemporary composition. Huston's debut solo recording, Three Centuries of Music for the Classical Guitar, was released to critical acclaim. His latest recording, Nocturno, released in 2002, has been hailed by Guitart International as "a truly satisfying CD with great depth and a program rich in diversity with much to say…devastatingly beautiful and challenging…" Huston holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Georgia, a Masters degree in Music from Georgia State University, and a Bachelors degree in Economics from the University of Iowa. He currently resides in Atlanta,Georgia, where he serves of the faculty of Georgia State University. Director Fyodor Cherniavsky has directed the Gainesville Symphony Orchestra, the Central Florida Symphony Orchestra and the Georgia Senior High All- State Orchestra in Savannah, to name but a few. He has held positions as Music Director and Conductor of Capitol City Opera, the Atlanta Community Orchestra, the Atlanta Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, the Atlanta Meistersingers and the Sandy Springs Chorale. Born into a musical family, Mr. Cherniavsky is the greatgrandson of Avrum Cherniavsky, a conductor of youth orchestras in the Ukraine during the end of the nineteenth century. The DeKalb Symphony is brought to Young Harris College through the Fay Harmon Clegg Hoag '33 Concert Series. This endowed fund was established in 1975 by alumni of Young Harris College to honor Fay Harmon Clegg Hoag, an alumna of the College, wife of a College president, and secretary of the Alumni Association. The endowment funds an annual concert each year. The concert is also partially funded by a grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly. GCA is a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. |
