Kiwanis Club of Blairsville makes gift to Community Council The Kiwanis Club of Blairsville has given $500 to the "Partners in Service" Campaign of the Community Council. Charlie Krick, President-Elect, said "The Kiwanis Club of Blairsville is pleased to continue its support of the efforts of the Community Council in service to the region. We are particularly impressed with the programs targeted to the young people of the North Georgia mountains, which is totally consistent with the goals of Kiwanis." The Kiwanis Club of Blairsville was organized in 1950 and currently has thirtyone members. The Club is an organization of concerned citizens who work to raise money for worthy projects in Union County. Ninety percent or more of the moneys raised are for youth in the county including annual scholarships and other special projects. The Kiwanis Club of Blairsville also supports seniors and the adult literacy program. Kiwanis Club members donate numerous hours of work to make its fund-raising events successful. Among its most prominent events are the Kiwanis Golf Tournament, the Kiwanis Fish Fry, the Kiwanis Sorghum Store at the Sorghum Festival and the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. In addition to fund raising, club members donate their time and talents in numerous community projects. In receiving the gift, Jim Dobson of the Community Council said," As a Kiwanian, I am pleased that the Kiwanis Club of Blairsville has been a partner with the Community Council from the very beginning. We are grateful for the Club's continuing generous support." Upcoming spring programs of the Community Council available to Union County students include a Birds Project for first graders, an All About Trees experience for fourth graders and an Environmental Field Day for fifth graders. Last year 1,200 Union County students benefited from the Council's programs. The next adult seminar is scheduled for March 23 and will be on hemlock trees. |
