Super Saturday returns to Tri County Community College

If you are traveling near Tri County Community College on a Saturday in March this year, you may again see rockets flying through the air, or kids practicing their fly casting, or perhaps learning how to groom and care for horses. It is all part of Super Saturday, a local program to give kids in grades 3 through 8 a chance to learn new skills and have some fun on March 17, 24, and 31st.

The program, which has been around for many years now, continues to expand. "We are expecting over 200 students this year and are offering 26 different classes," says Jeff Larson, director of Super Saturday. "We have added several new classes this year including Hip-Hop Dancing, First Aid and a forensics class called CSI Murphy."

One of the hardest things for the students is to choose which 2 classes they want out of the 26 available. Brochures have been distributed to students in grades 3-8 at all the schools in Cherokee and Clay County, and additional brochures are available at the Murphy Public Library and at Peachtree Internal Medicine. The applications are due on Friday, March 2, but will be accepted later on a space available basis.

United Community Bank, Macon Bank, First Citizens Bank, and Nantahala Bank and Trust have donated money to pay for t shirts for the students and scholarships for some students in need. "I remember making rockets in Super Saturday when I was a kid," says John Snow III, of Nantahala Bank in Murphy. "I had a great time!" Kids from Super Saturday 2007 are sure to remember this unique experience for years to come.
