YHC sweeps Roane St.
Lions go 4-0 in successful weekend series

The Young Harris College Mountain Lions swept Roane State in their home opening weekend. The Mountain Lions played solid defense all weekend only committing 1 error. The YHC pitching staff also played a big role in the sweep of Roane State. They combined for a 1.63 ERA with 41 strikeouts and only allowed 18 hits over the four game series. YHC hit .392 this weekend with 16 extra base hits. The Mountain Lions were also aggressive on the bases stealing 10-11 throughout the weekend.

Gm. 1: YHC 17 - Roane St. 4

Freshman Stephen McCray got the opening day start for the Mountain Lions and got credit for the first win of the 2007 season. McCray was outstanding in his third start of the season. He threw seven innings, allowed four runs, and struck out 9 Roane State batters. Every YHC starting hitter recorded at least one hit with five Mountain Lions recording two or more. Mike Markakis, Matt Sanders, Mike Lobacz, Zac Rhinesmith, and J.C. Lyons all had two hits and crossed the plate a combined 10 times while driving in 9 runs.

Gm. 2: YHC 3 - Roane St. 0

Sophomore Will Harvil was almost unhittable in the second game against Roane State. The only hit Harvil allowed was in the top of the third on a check swing by the leadoff batter. Harvil threw a complete game striking out 9 Radiers. The Mountain Lions got on board in the first inning when Mike Lobacz drove a ball into left center scoring leadoff batter Michael Hornsby. The Mountain Lions added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Mark Thomas connected for his second homerun of the season into the trees in deep left center field.

Gm 3: YHC 7 - Roane St. 0

Sophomore Nick Terry picked up his first win of the season in convincing fashion. The lefty kept the Roane State hitters off balance only allowing two hits in his complete game shutout. Matt Sanders, Mark Thomas, and Mike Markakis led the way offensively with two hits a piece. Markakis continued his hot hitting launching a first inning solo homerun. Sanders had 2 hits a drove in 2 runs on the day and Thomas went 2-3 with a run and a RBI.

Gm 4: YHC 12 - Roane 4

The Mountain Lions finished off the sweep in convincing fashion scoring five runs in the first inning and finishing the game with 12 runs on 15 hits. Freshman Grimes Medlin pitched five innings with 10 strikeouts to pick up the win. Medlin was relived by Charles Matthews and Mark Swanson. Mark Thomas finished off an impressive series going 3-3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI's. Thomas finished the game with 2 doubles and a triple.
