MACA Lions head for state tourney

Last week was another big week for the Mountain Area Christian Academy (MACA) Lions as they march toward the Georgia Association of Christian Schools State C h a m p i o n s h i p Tournament in Macon.

Friday the team traveled to Cumming to play Covenant Christian Academy. Against Covenant Christian the boys were led in scoring by Joey Danek and Steven Vecchio. Danek scored 20 points and Aaron Matthews added 10 as the Lions used a very balanced scoring attack to beat Covenant 73-44.

Monday, MACA visited War Hill Christian School in Dawsonville. There the girls and boys varsity teams were both victorious. The girls region record now stands at 4- 1 and qualifies them for the state tournament.

The Lions boys won their hard fought contest against War Hill 68-52. MACA fell behind 15-10 at the end of the first quarter, but just before the end of the first half they gained the lead. The third quarter was the decisive quarter as the Lions outscored their opponent 24-8. The team held that 16 point margin throughout the fourth quarter to post their sixteenth win of the season. By winning, the varsity boys insured a place in the state tournament.

the Lions finished their regular season with a win over Jubilee Christian School, Gainesville, Georgia. Jubilee came into the game.with a record of 9-0 in the conference. MACA Lion Junior Phillip Kight had a career high of 19 points and Joey Danek continued his strong season with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Coach Steve Shamblin praised the boys for focusing on playing as a team and never giving up. Both the boys and the girls teams are waiting to hear who their opponents will be in the State tournament.

The junior varsity Lions also had a very successful week as they beat Covenant by a 30-19 score. Rhett McCombs, Peter Danek, and Nathan DeCarlo led the Lions with 6 points each. The War Hill contest was very tight as the two teams entered the fourth quarter tied 22-22.

The Lions outscored War Hill 14-9 in the final quarter to earn the victory. In that contest the Lions were led by DeCarlo with 12 points and McCombs with 9 points. The JV record now stands at 14-1.
