Paw's Corner Q: Far too often, I scan through my local newspaper or online classifieds only to see ad after ad offering free puppies, kittens, birds ... you name it. Last week someone was trying to give away an entire chicken coop! I think that these ads are inappropriate, and that people should take care of their pets and not give them away. What action can I take to stop the newspaper and online sites from permitting these ads? - Sandra G., via email A: While I applaud your concern for pets that are being given up by their owners, I don't agree that such ads are inappropriate. The owners are making a genuine effort to place their pets in a good home. We don't know what the circumstances of these owners are. In the case of the chicken coop, perhaps the owner got sick or can no longer afford to keep them. Or maybe the city changed its regulations on the types of animals that can be kept in one's backyard. I would much rather see an ad placed, offering to give a pet to a good home, than to see that pet abandoned and wandering - or worse. For people considering adopting a "giveaway pet," be sure to meet the owner and the pet before agreeing to anything. A trip to the veterinarian for a full checkup should be done either during the meeting phase or as soon as you decide to adopt the pet. Ask the former owner about any behavior and health issues, special diet considerations, current medications, and the pet's favorite toys and activities. These steps will help make the transition from one home to another as smooth as possible. Send your tips, questions and comments to Paws Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O.
