Reflections on Georgia Politics Seminar Young Harris College and the Institute for Continuing Learning's seminars, "Reflections on Georgia Politics," will present a conversation with Bert Lance, who was active in many areas of Georgia politics and served on the national level as Director of the Office of Management and Budget in the Carter Administration. Lance, a member of the Young Harris College Board of Trustees, will chat with program host, Bob Short, on Thursday, January 25 at 3:15 p.m. in the Wilson Lecture Hall on the Young Harris College campus. The seminar, which is open to the community free of charge, provides participants with an inside look at Georgia's public servants over the past five decades. Thomas Bertram Lance's close association with Young Harris College began during his childhood, when his father, Thomas Jackson Lance, served as President of the College. The Lance family served the campus for ten years before moving on to Calhoun in Gordon County, where Lance spent most of the rest of his life. After graduating from the University of Georgia and completing graduate studies at LSU, Lance entered the banking business in Calhoun and not long after met and became a close friend of then state senator Jimmy Carter. Their friendship lasted for years, through the Carter governorship, where Lance served as State Highway Director, and through the Carter presidency where Lance served as Director of OMB. In later years, Bert Lance served as Chair of the Democratic Party in Georgia. Married to his childhood friend, LaBelle David, Bert Lance continues to serve his local community, church, and Young Harris College. Lance and Bob Short (YHC '51) will discuss Carter's unsuccessful campaign for governor in 1966; his election to the governorship in 1970; and his campaign for the presidency, election, and administration. Contact the Office of Administration at Young Harris College (706-379-5164) for additional information. ICLis a not-for-profit organization providing scholarship money for students at YHC.
