Bright and airy, with a whiff of fresh paint still in the air, the "new" Granny's Attic re-opened this past sunny Wednesday morning amid the crowd of well-wishers, volunteers and hopeful shoppers. Despite the chill in the air, many Granny's Attic Volunteers and board members as well as Chamber of Commerce representatives, Murphy Medical Center representatives and Good Shepherd Home Health and Hospice staff attended the outdoor ribbon cutting, complete with "big scissors" and plenty of heartfelt hugs.
Granny's Attic, a favorite resale shop among bargain hunters, has just moved from downtown Hayesville to a more spacious location off Highway 64, still in the Hayesville proper. It seemed a perfect match to be located in the same shopping mall as Good Shepherd Home Health and Hospice, Inc. Proceeds from Granny's Attic support the Good Shepherd hospice work done in our community. Hospice patient's medications and treatments are paid for, in part, by the sale of these donated goods and clothing. Last year the hardworking volunteers donated $19,300.00.to the hospice program as well as gave a $1,000 scholarship to a student continuing their education in the healthcare field.
Murphy Medical Center's Maintenance department staff worked under the direction of volunteers to build and install permanent clothes racks, shelving and cases. The freshly painted and well lit store has the look and feel of a nice clothing store. Neat racks of children's, women's and men's clothes, sorted by size and style, line the walls and in between. Jewelry, household items, framed pictures and knick knacks are beautifully arranged.
Granny Attic Volunteers worked endlessly over the Christmas holidays sorting, tagging and preparing for the big moving day. Their preparation combined with the muscle power of the maintenance department made for a smooth move, according to Granny's Attic Volunteer President Tanya Ruggiano, expressing her deep gratitude to both volunteers and staff.
Good Shepherd Home Health and Hospice manager, Towanna Roberts expressed appreciation to Granny's Attic Volunteers for their continual financial support of the Hospice program, to Murphy Medical Center CEOMike Stevenson, for his approval of the project, the MMC Maintenance Department for building renovations and the move, as well as the core moving volunteer team; Jean Higgins, Lois Gamble, Ruth Ayers, Pat Fesenmyer Marie McCann Tayna Ruggiano and others. "We hope this new home for Granny's Attic will bring many opportunities to improve our services to the community and help hospice patients in need," Roberts said. She also expressed appreciation to Murphy Medical Center Foundation for the donation of a new cash register for the store.
