The Panthers pulled out a big win over White County last week, defeating the team that handed them their only loss of the season.

“It was very important to beat them from the revenge standpoint, and also from the fact that they are a good team,” said Head Coach Tim Hunter. “If you want to be good you have to get used to beating a good team like them.”

The Panthers were led by Corey Garrett, who posted 28 points, 18 of which in the first half. “Corey had a huge game,” said Coach Hunter. “He had a great night for us. They just didn’t have an answer for him inside. We took away some of the backside help and you’re going to have a hard time guarding Corey in the post one-on-one. I was excited about him stepping into his own and play- ing inside.”

Austin Collins also had a big night, hitting a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, en route to 15 points. “That was the difference in them having a chance to play for the win and us having a decent lead,” said Coach Hunter, referring to the fact that White tied the game 52-52 in the final minutes, before Collins helped Union regain the lead. “Austin had a very big night for us too. [His scoring] was kind of overshadowed by Corey’s night, but Austin was also asked to guard their best player and he did a fantastic job. He did everything we needed him to do.”

Michael Ross drives in. Ross was in double figures in every game last week, for a total of 49 points.
Coach Hunter said that overall it was a well played game between two quality teams. “We both played hard and executed well and were fortunate to win that game,” said Coach Hunter. “It was a tough fought game. I was as proud of our kids for that 8 point win as I have been with 20 or 30 point wins. It was a quality win for us.”

Union Co 48 - Pickens Co. 40

The Panthers followed the win over White with another big win over a tough Pickens County squad. “We won but did not play well,” said Coach Hunter. “They’re the kind of team you have to put away because they shoot the ball too well. If you don’t take care of business with them, you’re going to have problems.”

Austin Collins sinks a clutch free throw against the Warriors.
The Panthers started hot, taking a 19-8 lead and eventually built a 13 point lead, but went cold in the second quarter. “We went on a horrendous shooting run,” said Coach Hunter.

“We got in a lot of foul trouble too. We play aggressive defense, and when you do that, you’re going to get in foul trouble. We’re just fortunate that our guys coming in off the bench are contributing and doing good things for us. Caleb Kelly came in and gave us a big lift in the second quarter.”

The coach said that overall Pickens is a tough place to play. “That gym is a hard place to go down there and get a win so we were happy to get that taken care of.” The Panthers shot 89 percent from the free throw line, but did not have a lot of opportunities, settling for outside shots instead of pounding the ball inside.

Michael Ross led the team with 17 points and added 6 rebounds. Corey Garrett was also in double figures with 10 points.

Union Co. 75 - Tallulah Falls 52

The Panthers rounded out an undefeated week with a win over an athletic Tallulah Falls club. “That team has some athletes,” said Coach Hunter. “They are very athletic.”

The coach said that his team had a good night shooting, and won playing disciplined basketball, getting the opponent in foul trouble and boxing out hard, not allowing offensive rebounds.

“That was a very big win for us,” said Coach Hunter. “We were playing without both our starting big men [early], but Caleb Kelley, Kody Owenby, and Matt Schmidt came in and did a great job for us in the paint. Every guy we brought in off the bench played well for us. That was the biggest difference, between our bench play and their bench play.”

Michael Ross led all scorers with 21 points, all of which came off of three-pointers. Corey Garrett added 14, all of which came in the second half. “Ross had the big first half for us and Corey stepped in and had a big second half,” said the coach.

Caleb Kelley added 8 points while Matt Schmidt and Colton Payne each had 6. Josh Colwell got the first points of his varsity career and Brad Beise saw his first action of his varsity career.
