Elizabeth “Bettie” Shipman Thompson
Mrs. Elizabeth “Bettie” Shipman Thompson, 92, of Blairsville, Ga., died peacefully at her home Friday, December 15, 2006.
Mrs. Thompson was born Thursday, January 15, 1914 in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Edward Tuthill Shipman and the late Emily Louise Wait Shipman. She attended schools in Brooklyn, including Girls Commercial High School, where she earned four years highest honors in science. After attending Brooklyn College, she was employed by Shell Oil Company. She lived in Stamford, Conn., and Miami, Fla., before moving to Blairsville in 1976. Before her retirement, she was employed by Burdine’s in Miami and also operated the This ‘n That Shop for Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove. Her primary commitment, always, however was to being a wife and mother. After moving to Blairsville, Mrs. Thompson was a member of First United Methodist Church of Union County.
Survivors include her loving husband of 65 years, Edward T. Thompson of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Terry Kelley of St. Augustine, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, E. Thomas “Tom” and Mi Lan Thompson of Norcross, Ga.; daughter, Dr. Nancy Thompson of Atlanta, Ga.; brother and sister-inlaw, Frederick E. and Teresa Shipman of
Tonawanda, N.Y.; cousin,
Ora Renesse of Massa
Pequa, N.Y.; granddaughter,
Nancy Jennifer
Folsom; granddaughter and husband, Holly Elizabeth and Matthew Vaupel; grandson and wife, William Edward and Sonia Folsom; great granddaughters, Emily Mae Folsom, Aubrielle Christiane Vaupel; and step-great granddaughter, Florence Rubio.
Memorial services will be held Monday, January 15, 2007 at 2:00 PM from the First United Methodist Church of Union County with the Rev. Nancy Joyner officiating. Interment will be in the Georgia National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to Meals on Wheels.
