Regency Hospice brings Christmas trees to patients
This week the staff and volunteers of Regency Hospice will bring Christmas trees to all of their patients as a gift from the staff. Regency Hospice would like to take this time to educate others regarding the special challenges for patients, family and friends under hospice care during the holiday season.
Regency Hospice assists with numerous activities to help families around the holidays to include assistance with the physical care of the patients, as well as emotional and spiritual support for their families.
Here are a few considerations for helping out or just showing you care during the holidays:
- Reach out with a visit or a phone call to let them know your thinking about them. Ask what you could do to help during the holidays
-Spend time with the patient to allow the caregiver time to shop and/or go to functions they might otherwise miss or just take a needed break
- Send a holiday meal
- Help decorate
- See if you can assist with a family members special holiday requests
- Remember, do not create pressure or anxiety while trying to be helpful
Some gift ideas for hospice patients and caregivers might include:
- Something that is associated with a good memory or time spent together
- Transportation to church, the doctor, shopping, or wherever they might want to go
- Handyman services to help with needs around the house that no one has time for
- Prepared meals – there are a number of places that will provide catered meals in the home
Cindy Hathcock, Executive Director said, “As hospice caregivers, we know how challenging the holiday season can be. Our team works especially hard during this time to help families maximize the opportunity to get together and make sure they continue to make new memories.”
