Mountain Chorus presents 32nd annual Christmas concerts

The Christmas Season will again be ushered in by the Mountain Community Chorus with it's thirty-second annual season of Christmas concerts. As has become the tradition, the sanctuary of Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church in Young HArris again welcomes the audiences to it's lovely setting and very pleasant acoustical environment. There will be two performances this year, the first of which will be Friday evening, December 8th at 8 o'clock, and again on Sunday afternoon, December 10th at 3:00 o'clock. Admission is free but donations will be welcome.

This year's program, as usual, represents a wide variety of Yuletide Music. One section presents carols from different cultures such as Spanish, French, English, German, Austrian, American; and these from varying time periods. At least two carols were collected in Cherokee County, N.C. by John Jacob Niles. There are some newly composed carols and some from much earlier periods.

The largest work is a setting of MAGNIFICANT by G. Pergolesi, from the seventeenth century. This is a Latin setting of Mary's song of meek rejoicing at being chosen to be the mother of Christ. There are six short movements in this piece performed by mixed chorus, four soloists, piano, and string quartet.

Another feature of the program will be presentations by the Women's Choir, the Men's Choir, and the Chamber Choir. Some of the pieces invite the audience to join in singing verses of familiar carols, and the final number of the program will be the "Hallelujah Chorus" from MESSIAH. the audience is also invited to "singalong" along this, ut the singers will need to bring their own scores orsing from memory.

Come out and join us to begin the Christmas Season with joyous singing and equally joyous listening.
