Union Sentinel accepted into Ga. Press Association
By JARED PUTNAM

The Union Sentinel was accepted into the Georgia Press Association (GPA) last week, marking another significant milestone in the development of the newspaper. Founded in 1887, the GPAserves as an organization that champions the interests and well-being of the newspaper industry in Georgia.

This move allows the Union Sentinel to be part of one of the most prestigious press associations in the country, as well as access to the many resources and services which it provides, such as databases, seminars, and conferences. "This is another great step forward," said Union Sentinel Publisher Rainer Arnold. "The Georgia Press Association is a terrific organization and they have already been extremely helpful and accommodating to us."

GPA members are also eligible for competitions such as the GPA Better Newspaper Contest, which consists of more than 30 categories that select outstanding photos, writing, layout, and more. This means that for the very first time in it's history, the Union Sentinel and its employees will have the opportunity to compete for awards. "That is something that is long overdue," said Arnold. "It is one reason why Jared and I have both pushed very hard for the owner of the paper to let us advance it in this way. The Union Sentinel has had many talented people, past and present, and they deserve the opportunity to have their work recognized in a professional manner by this very professional association." The GPA website, gapress.org, describes the history and function of the organization

as follows: "In 1887,

the Georgia Press Association was founded to bring together Georgia

newspapers. Their

goal: Create an

organization, which

would protect, promote, foster and advance the interest of the newspaper industry in Georgia.

Today, the Georgia Press Association is still growing, and our members remain among the top business leaders in the state. From rural weeklies to metropolitan dailies, Georgia newspapers are close to the heart and soul of the community in every city and town.

Our members carry out the goal of their early predecessors by securing unity of thought and action in all matters pertaining to the profession of journalism. The membership is guided in its quest by an 18- member board of directors and numerous permanent and special committees."
