State Representative Charles Jenkins was victorious in his race as well, retaining his position in the Georgia House as Representative of the 8th District, as Union County carried him to victory over opponent Frank Wheeler. In Union County Representative Jenkins pulled in 4,190 votes (61.21 percent) compared to Wheeler's 2,652 votes (38.74 percent). The official district totals show Jenkins received a total of 8,920 votes (51.5 percent) while Wheeler received 8,401 (48.5 percent). "I felt like I was running against the governor and my opponent because my opponent more or less attached himself to the governor pretty closely," said Jenkins, who expressed his appreciation for everyone that voted for him, especially in Union County. "It carried me almost two to one," said Jenkins. "I just appreciate that my home county did that for me. I think it showed that they have confidence in me." He added that while he enjoys clean politics, this last campaign had its share of mudslinging. "We had a lot of nasty and dirty stuff during this last campaign that we shouldn't have had," said Jenkins. "If we're going to get out of this partisan situation we're going to have to start working together and I think that's very important in the well being of our state." |
