Veterans Day program to honor POWs, Honor Guard

Union County American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts are directing a Veterans Day program and luncheon honoring former POW's, the North Georgia Honor Guard, and their spouses on Saturday, November 11, 2006 at the Junior Brackett Community Room. The program will start at 11 a.m. and run concurrently with a luncheon that should be over by 1 p.m. The Junior Brackett Community room building is northeast, or behind and to the right, of United Community Bank in Blairsville.

The program will include a Ceremony of Missing Hats to honor our missing loved comrades; recognition of attending POW's or their widow; a recap of the great service provided by the North Georgia Honor Guard; and presentation of the Commander's Award. The Commander's Award is presented annually to a worthy veteran who has

demonstrated outstanding contributions to the community and to veterans organizations throughout the year. Our gueat speaker will be Major General Jere H. Akin (ret.) presently form Morganton, GA.

Major General Akin served in the Army from 1959 to 1992 with field and troop assignments with the 8th infantry Division in Germany; as company commander of the Supply and Service Company, 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam; as commander of the 2nd Supply and Transportation Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division Support Command in Korea; and as commander of the Eagle Support Brigade, 1010st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, KY.
