Young Harris College News Former Governor Joe Frank and First Lady Elizabeth Harris Young Harris College and the Institute for Continuing Learning's seminars, "Reflections on Georgia Politics," will present a conversation with former Georgia Governor Joe Frank Harris and former First Lady Elizabeth Carlock Harris on Thursday, November 2, at 3:15 p.m. in the Wilson Lecture Hall on the Young Harris College campus. The seminar, which is open to the community free of charge, provides participants with an inside look at Georgia's public servants over the past five decades. Joe Frank Harris, a Bartow County native and graduate of the University of Georgia, entered the political arena in 1964 and served in the Georgia House of Representatives for nine consecutive terms. Named Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee in 1974, Harris captured the respect of his fellow legislators, who encouraged him to run for the state's highest office in 1982. After a tough primary campaign, Harris earned the Democratic nomination and went on to be elected governor. During the Harris Administration Georgia began moving toward its prominent place on the national and world stage with the funding of the Georgia Dome and successful bid for the 1996 Olympic Games. The state highway system was upgraded, and innovative reform of the state's educational system was begun. Harris's program, Quality Based Education, improved funding for Georgia public schools, introduced new programs for students with disabilities, and increased teacher salaries. After retiring as governor, Joe Frank Harris returned to private business, taking time to write a book, Personal Reflections on a Public Life. He served on the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. Governor Harris and his wife, Elizabeth, reside in Bartow County. "Reflections on Georgia Politics" is hosted by political insider, Bob Short, a 1951 Young Harris Collegegraduate. Short will interview Governor Harris about his personal reflections on life and politics during his administration. Mrs. Harris will share her personal reminisces on her role as First Lady.
