RAINER'S RAMBLINGS
This and that
By RAINER ARNOLD

I have been struggling with what to talk about in this weeks Ramblings. After all, there are so many things going on around here that I thought I would just ramble on and on and see what happens.

First, the Sorghum Festival. I think it is a great event. It brings people from outside up here and gives them an opportunity to leave some of their money here with us.

Also, I see a lot of lights on at the Park and people playing all kinds of sports. As a matter of fact I have found out that there are some adult teams out there that play very competitive softball. That also brings people to Union County and they do spend some money here as well and we like that.

Then I read in the Sound Off or Vent that there are these people that make sarcastic remarks about the new courthouse and that one office has a great view of the golf course. Other comments about the money and do we need that expensive a court house.

Well, all I can say is that people who do not have the courage to put their name on their comments don't need to be heard. My opinion on the new court house is positive. After all, we are a growing area and we ought to have a courthouse that looks nice to people who may be looking to relocate here.

As far as the office is concerned. If I were the commissioner of Union County I would want a nice office. If I am the Chief Executive Officer of a large company I would also have a nice office. And then people say ridiculous things about tax money. Well, a CEO of a large company takes stockholders money and they don't complain that much.

As commissioner he has an obligation to have a nice office. After all, people come to town and when they come to the office they ought to be positively influenced and know that this county is solvent and not on the brink of economic despair. In other words, put your best foot forward.

And here is the last part of the Ramblings. Fall is coming and the leaf watchers are coming. This means 1,000's of people will drive through the mountains of Union County. They will eat here and maybe even stay here. They will buy souvenirs, newspapers and maybe even property. So, be on the lookout for these people. Treat them right, after all they might become your neighbor some day. But when you drive behind them have mercy on them when they have their blinkers on and then don't turn. They are likely to be lost. Have patience. Remember, they are tourist and they will buy stuff and pay local taxes so you have to pay less.
