What ever happened to ... Rex White

Rex White won six of his 28 career victories in 1960, the year he was crowned Cup champion.
Rex White, the 1960 Cup champion and a 28- time winner on the Cup circuit, left NASCAR in 1964 and worked as a service manager at a car dealership, for Delta Air Lines and as a truck driver.

He is retired and lives in Fayetteville, Ga. He has written an autobiography, "Gold Thunder," and travels the country appearing at NASCARrelated events. He recently spoke with Rick Minter of Cox News Service.

On the highlights of his career: "One would have to be the championship, and the other was winning at Atlanta in 1962 because it was a long and well-paying race. And the fact that I ran good the whole time I raced. I won a race the first year I ran and every year after that. All the races I won were highlights of my career."

On whether he left racing too soon: "I think if I had tried to form another team or get another ride, I believe I could have been competitive, definitely."

On being recognized so much so many years after he stopped racing: "I can't believe how people stand in line and push and shove to get my autograph. Racing has grown so much, and it's become so popular."

On the differences in racing today and in his era: "One of the biggest things is the money. There's a lot more of it. And there are so many rules. Racing now is nothing like it was back then. And there's so much media. The media center in Atlanta used to be the trunk of the reporter's car."

On the current driver most like Rex White: "Mark Martin is courteous and a good driver. I like his way of driving and the way he races with everybody."
