Jenkins Co-sponsored legislation for Georgians who cannot afford medications

State Representative Charles Jenkins (D-Blairsville) co-sponsored HB 1178 during the 06 Session of the General Assembly that is sure to have a positive effect for those in the 8th State House District and throughout Georgia.

HB 1178, the Utilization of Unused Prescription Drugs Act, would allow unused prescription drugs, other than prescription drugs defined as controlled substances, to be transferred from health care facilities to pharmacies designated or approved by the Department of

Human Resources. The facilities or pharmacies could then distribute the drugs to residents of Georgia who are medically indigent. It would be a statewide program developed by the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy, the Department of Human Resources, and the Department of Community Health.

"I was proud to sponsor this bill that will allow those who cannot afford certain medications to receive them from their local pharmacist," said Jenkins. "The high cost of quality

health insurance and prescription drugs makes it difficult for so many in our state. As the state representative, I will continue to work to lower the cost of quality healthcare for everyone."

Jenkins, a lawmaker since 2003, serves on the Economic Development and Tourism, Game Fish and Parks and Retirement committees. He is running for re-election as a representative from State House District 8, which encompasses Rabun, Towns, Union, and part of White Counties.
