Union preps for opener
By JARED PUTNAM

The Panthers varsity football team is set to kickoff the season this Friday, September 8 on the road against rival Towns County Indians.

The Panthers defeated the Indians last year in the opening game of the season. This season Towns began their schedule against Andrews, falling to the Wildcats in that contest.

While the coaching staff did scout that game, the focus is inhouse, as the team has used the scrimmage against Gilmer County, as well as the open week this week, to work on improving fundamentals and any weaker aspects of play.

Coach Peugh said that initially he didn't like the idea of having an open week followed by 10 consecutive weeks of games, but is now glad that he had the extra week to get ready for the games that count.

Meanwhile the coaching staff is still evaluating talent, looking to see who is performing in the areas of effort and execution.

The team effort and execution will both be tested Friday night, as the team will gets its first taste of regular season action.
Players work on defensive drills such as batting down the pass.
