For the fifth year in a row the Mountain Marketplace Heritage Festival highlighted Labor Day weekend here in Union County, as newcomers and longtime residents alike took the opportunity to relive the past. In spite of rain showers early Saturday, the festival experienced a turnout that Union County Historical Society Executive Director Steve Oakley was happy with.
"This might have been our best [year] ever," said Oakley, "even with the rain." Oakley said that Sunday was by far the best they ever had. He estimated that the event attracted thousands, though it is hard to accurately gauge because the event is free.
It remains a small, intimate affair because the location limits how much it can grow. Organizers focus on quality over quantity. "The crafters were very high quality," said Oakley, who explained that the festival tries to be selective, taking vendors that are most related to the heritage of the area.
This year, gold panning was especially popular. Other attractions included Jason Martin, who is involved with

the Sons of Confederate Veterans and participates in Civil War reenactments, "Jill" the mule, and R.O. Wilson splitting wood. Wilson was once the official woodsplitter during the World's Fair in Knoxville.
Oakley said he wants to continue raising money to do
more with the site. Plans include adding a corn crib, smokehouse, chicken house, and possibly a blacksmith shop. "We're hoping to have living history going on," said Oakley, "maybe even year round if the visitation will support it."
Oakley said a major goal is to educate people about how extremely resourceful and creative people from this area had to be in the past. "We'd like to preserve some of the old ways and show people moving in how difficult it was to live in the mountains."
