Stephens Federal in Hiawassee robbed
By JOAN CROTHERS

A daylight robbery took place when a lone man demanded money at Stephens Federal Bank in Hiawassee Tuesday, August 29, around 3:15 p.m.

According to Hiawassee Police Chief Jimmy Wright, the man came and left on foot and his description was sent out on the scanner. The SBI (State Bureau of Investigation) airplane from North Carolina circled the area for an hour without finding any trace of the man.

Chief Wright said the security camera gave them a "blurry" picture, but the teller described him as a white male in his late 20s, thin build, approximately 5'8" tall. He presented a note and put the money in a plastic grocery bag.

"No gun was shown," said Wright. "GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) is investigating the robbery and asked that the amount of money and the contents of the note not be disclosed at this time." No one had been apprehended at press time.
