Joey Logano

Joey Logano, shown in 2003 when he was 13, has two wins in the Hooters Pro Cup Series.
Joey Logano, a 16-year-old short-track driver from Middletown, Conn., was first discovered by Mark Martin, and the general thinking was that Logano would wind up at Roush Racing like Martin.

But he's now under contract with Joe Gibbs Racing, which is fielding cars for him in the Hooters Pro Cup Series, where he has two victories and is the circuit's youngest race winner. He recently spoke with Cox News Service reporter Rick Minter.

On his season so far: "We're decent, but we're not where we need to be.We're getting there. We've gone through a couple of crew chiefs but now we've got someone, Tony Blanchard, who I really like. We've had cars that could win races that we haven't won."

On his relationship with Joe Gibbs Racing: "I'm under contract with them.We race out of their Busch shop. I go testing with them. It's pretty much an all-out deal."

On the cars he has driven for Gibbs: "I've been testing Tony Stewart's Cup cars. They let me go to tracks like Kentucky Speedway. It's helped me a ton, even coming back to short tracks. The stuff I learn about driving styles helps a lot."

On his future plans: "I'm just 16, so it'll be two years before I can drive anything in NASCAR.We'll most likely start in the Busch Series, but that's two years down the road, so anything can change. ...We're not even sure what we're going to do next year.We just take it one day at a time and run as many races as we can."

On his interaction with Gibbs teammates Denny Hamlin, Stewart and J.J. Yeley: "Tony lives in Indiana, so I don't get to see him much. J.J. and I get along good. I can lean on him and ask him any question I want and he'll answer them and help me out a lot. Denny, I don't see a whole lot. I'd like to talk to him. He's a cool guy."

On whether he attends Nextel Cup races: "I go to Atlanta all the time, and to the ones at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Mostly, I watch them on TV just like everybody else."
