Alcohol in the Bible Part 4 of 4 The struggle of maintaining a "dry county" mirrors the struggle to maintain a "dry country" during the prohibition era. It was for the country and appeared to be for the county, a struggle of old values verses new vision. Union County just recently voted on this popular issue and the "NO" voters won by a very small margin. It would be assumed that many of the "YES" voters on the alcohol question were professed, Bible-believing Christians. This series was written to show Christians in our county that if we follow scripture as our guide, we must always vote "NO" to alcohol, for the Bible forbids the consumption of alcohol. There are some misunderstood scriptures that have led to a wrong view on the subject and we have discussed the most popular ones in Parts 2 and 3 of this series. Alcohol kills, and the little good it does in promoting a healthy heart, for example, can be obtained by drinking grape juice which will not give you any negative side effects. All addictive substances including alcohol mimic what good nutrition does in your body. Alcohol initially has a relaxing affect upon the body. This is what is gained by eating whole grains with B vitamins such as brown rice, millet, and things made with whole wheat. As you drink more alcohol, it numbs pain. This pain relief benefit can be obtained by eating a good diet with plenty of raw fruits and vegetables. These have pain relieving prostaglandins that counteract the tenseness and stress that exacerbates pain receptors in our bodies. This is an encouragement to keep alcohol out of Union County for moral and health reasons. It has also been an announcement that the Bible teaches total abstinence, not moderation in alcohol consumption. Finally, when one whets his whistle with wine, he is parting his puckers for the entrance of a Trojan horse filled with armed soldiers destined to destroy his liver, esophagus, pancreas, and other organs.
