Williams named Union County Chairman

Andy Williams, President of United Community Bank of Union County, has been named Union County Chairman of the $90,000 "Partners in Service" Campaign of the community Council of the Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center. The announcement was made by Lou Ann Bleakley, Chairman of the Council. "We are very fortunate to have Andy heading the effort in Union County. He is a good friend of the Council and a persuasive advocate for out cause. We look forward to working with Andy and his team of volunteers. Under his leadership we are confident the campaign in Union County will be a success," said Bleakley. The campaign will be conducted in the GMRE Center's primary service area of Union, Towns and Fannin Counties over a seven-weeks period in September and October.

A native of Summerville, Georgia, Williams is a 1975 graduate of The University of Georgia. After two years with Millikin Textiles, he began his banking career in Rossville, Georgia. Later, Williams and twelve associates organized a commercial bank in Statesboro, Georgia. In November 1998 Williams joined

United Community Bank of Union County as president. He is a member of the Union County Rotary Club. Williams serves on the Advisory Council for Leadership Union of Blairsville-Union County Chamber of Commerce and is active on its Budget Committee, assisting in grant writing. He is a Deacon at Grace Community Presbyterian Church. Williams and his wife Sue have two children.

The Community Council has three emphases: educational enrichment experiences for students in the region, outreach programs for adults and preservation projects which help to preserve our mountain heritage.

Williams said, " The Community Council's track record of service to Union County and the region is impressive. We in Union County are fortunate to have the GMRE Center located here. A significant number of our citizens, both students and adults, are benefiting from the programs and activities at the GMRE Center. This is underscored by the fact that last year the Council served 2,100 students and 1, 200 of them were from Union County. The work of the Council is worthy of our time and financial support."
