Charles Jenkins, State Representative for District 8, brought an interesting discussion to the Kiwanis about what is going on at the state level in Georgia's legislative branch. The House of Representatives considered some 408 bills in the last year, and Jenkins is proud of the fact that the Governor has never vetoed one of his bills. Jenkins strongly feels that constructing Interstate 3 through this part of Georgia will have adverse effects on our area, and is opposed to this highway. He feels that the unstated use of this highway would be to easily transport nuclear waste from Oak Ridge, TN to Savannah, GA. Jenkins is proud to have sponsored a bill to identify US-19/129 south of Blairsville to the top of Blood Mountain as the Byron Herbert Reese Parkway, honoring the reknown poet from this area. He also sponsored a bill identifying GA-180 as the Clark/Dyer Parkway, honoring the local inventor that is now thought to have first invented the airplane.
Jenkins cited Georgia's $18.6 Billion budget, which finally provides salary increases for public safety officials and teachers.
Recently bills have been passed that will allow fishing with bare hands, using scopes on primitive rifles, restricting use of ATVs to those being 16 years of age or older and the authorization of automobile license plates identifying diabetic drivers that could need specific medical attention in cases of emergency.
