Paws Corner DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I'm responding to the lady in Providence about her overheated long-haired shepherd mix, "Max." I have a few pointers as well. She may want to search the Net to find special pet beds that remain cool in warm weather. I believe they are called Thermoregulating pet beds, or "Canine Coolers." She can also check out her local pet-supply stores. They range in price; however, I think for the benefit of her companion it's well worth it! Also try "Chilly Bone" or "Chilly Rings," they are made of tough canvas that absorbs water in a non-toxic fashion, and you can freeze them over and over. My dogs love them. Although they only stay cold for a few hours, if you purchase two you can have one freezing while the other is in use. I hope this helps "Max" stay a bit more comfy this summer. Good luck! - JenaLyn & Her Cool Pups in Bright, Ind. DEAR JENALYN: Thanks! Keeping cool is important for big dogs like Max, and having a few more items on hand to help him stay cool will certainly be a big help to his owner. While we're on the subject of products available to help pets get through the hottest days of the year, I'm seeing an array of protective items on pets out for a day on the town this summer. These include booties that keep paws from being burned by hot sidewalks (more commonly seen in the winter, protecting those same paws from cold injuries). As JenaLyn pointed out, many items are available to help keep pets cool, so head to the nearest pet store when you have a chance and see what's there.
