Six Union County Lions recently attended the third Cabinet meeting of 18-D followed by the annual 18-D Convention in Towns County.
The Cabinet meeting was conducted by District Governor Beverly Shirley with a large group of Lions from the three Regions of District 18-D.
Highlight of the afternoon meeting , of course, was the election of the 2006-2007 District 18-D cabinet officers during the Convention with Lion Ann Mundy, Chairperson of Nominations & Elections.
Current Vice District Governor Ken Thurmond is the Governor Elect. Lion Thurmond's home club is the White County Lions Club. The Vice Governor Elect is Lion Ruth Payton of the Toccoa Lions Club. The remaining cabinet officers will be appointed at a later date. These will include Secretary Treasurer, Zone Chairs and Region Chairs.
And now, a little more on the history of the Georgia Lions Lighthouse. A Hearing Conservation Committee was established in 1977 with the first hearing aid being dispensed to a woman in Moultrie, Georgia in 1978. Lion Ed Snyder was the first chairman of the Hearing Aid Bank.
White Cane Day had its beginning in Georgia in 1980 and the average collected each year is $150,000. The largest amount ever collected was $180,00 in 1993. By the way, White Cane Days for Union County Lions is scheduled for April 21 & 22, that is a Friday and Saturday. We would ask that you give generously as the gift of sight is precious.
Remember the Lions Motto: We serve.
