Alzheimer's & Dementia Support Group

This Alzheimer's Support Group provides interaction, information and inspiration for family members and caregivers in a confidential and supportive environment. This support group is affiliated with the Alzheimer's Association. For this month only we will meet on Thursday, April 6th at 7:00 p.m. at Oriska Loving Care Adult Day Care, 1200 McKim Dr. Blairsville. Respite care is available during this support group. Road to Recovery

Are you a cancer patient? Do you need a ride to and from your treatment sessions? A lack of transportation should not be the reason why cancer patients do not receive the life-saving cancer treatment they need. The American Cancer Society offers their Road to Recovery program to help transport cancer patients to and from their treatment. The Society has a toll-free number that you may call, and an operator will put you in touch with local volunteers that give cancer patients without personal transportation rides to and from their cancer treatment sessions. Bereavement Support Group

Welcome to a community bereavement support group, a place to share your thoughts and feelings and grow together with others who have experienced the loss of a loved one.

Where: United Community Bank (Near Ingles) Community Room 59 Highway 515, Blairsville. When: First Thursday of every month beginning January through June 2006 4-5 p.m.

Facilitator: Linda Tatum, LMFT

WRAP workshops

Free weekly WRAP workshops in Clay and Cherokee. Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Smokey Mountain Building in Hayesville. Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Meridian Building in Marble.

Offered by Meridian Behavioral Health Services, Wellness Recovery Action Planning, or WRAP, is an approach to managing mental health symptoms and/or substance abuse issues, emphasizing hope, education, empowerment, personal responsibility, and peer support.

In WRAP classes, individuals will develop their own plan to foster wellness with the support of trained peer facilitators. There is HOPE for a better life!

GWRRA meets

Chapter J of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) meets the third Saturday of each month at Daniel's Steak House in Hiawassee. Lunch is at 11 a.m. and the meeting is at noon.

We encourage current members of the GWRRA and anyone interested in becoming a member to join us. Guests are always welcome, and we look forward to seeing participants from other chapters. There are great rides coming up and we hope many of you will join us.

Benefit for Rebecca Noblet

April 29, 2006 we are hosting a benefit for Rebecca Noblet, daughter of the late Ralph Noblet. Activities for the benefit include a low country boil, an auction, a cake walk, and there will be a raffle for a Model 710 7mm rifle with scope. The benefit will be held at Hiawassee River Trout Lodge located on State Highway 75. Plates will begin being served at 1 p.m. The benefit, auction and other activities will begin at 7 p.m. We would really appreciate it if you would come out to support Rebecca in her time of need. Union County American Cancer Society Calendar

Relay for Life #12 June 23-24, 2006-at UCHS Stadium, opening ceremony honoring cancer survivors and caregivers at 6 p.m. Friday; Luminaria Candlelight Ceremony at 8a.m. Saturday with plenty of food, entertainment on the stage area, games and fellowship with over 22 Relay for Life Teams.

Survivor Celebration( prior to Relay for Life) on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. at North Georgia Technical College Campus in Blairsville, All survivors are urged to attend.

Look Good, Feel Better: Monday, April 24, 2006 1-3 p.m. in the conference room of the Cancer Treatment Center in Blairsville. Open to women patients who may experience hair loss or skin changes due to cancer treatments.

Man to Man Prostate Cancer

Support Group : meets monthly at the Cancer Treatment Center in Blairsville, Open to patients and families in need of information and support in facing prostate cancer issues.

Goodbye Income Tax & IRS

Non-partisan legislation, the Fair Tax Bill ( H.R. 25 ) introduced by Georgia U.S. Congressman John Linder, will eliminate all federal taxes, including payroll with holding, estate, capitol gains, etc. with a simple retail sales tax.

A local meeting this week of Mountaineers for FairTax will be held at the Union County Library on April 14 from 7 to 9 p.m.

UC Democratic Party

The Union County Democratic party will meet on Thursday, April 20 at the Senior Center in Blairsville. There will be a covered dish supper at 6:30 pm and the meeting will begin at 7:00pm. The featured topic will be "Lessons from Vietnam" and the speaker will be Dr. Lee March. Members as well as visitors are welcome to attend. Diabetes Foundation of GA Membership Campaign

To help the Diabetes population of Georgia become a member of our efforts to support the defeat of Diabetes in Georgia.

The membership cost is $20 a year and will keep you adivised of what the foundation is doing for Georgia diabetes. You can go to gadiabetes.org and keep informed.

Humane Society Meeting

The Humane Society's Mountain Shelter's regular board meeting will be held at The Cookie Jar Restaurant in Blairsville, Ga. at 5:30 p.m. on April 18, 2006

The annual meeting will Not be held until June of 2006. Place and time will be announced at a later date.

Prisoner of Meth

There will be an Informative Presentation held May 4 at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Blairsville. Journey into the dark world of methamphetamine use and the return trip into the light of intervention and recovery. Presentation is by Jesse W. Hambrick Jr. and Douglas County Meth Task Force.

Door prizes will be awarded. Sponsored by Union County High School SADD Club, Safe & Drug Free Schools, First Baptist Church, New Hope Counseling Center, and Union County Family Connection.
