Water Quality Summer Day Camp A water quality summer day camp is being offered by the Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition Inc and is being sponsored by the Community Council of the GA Mountain Research & Education Center through the donations from the Union & Fannin Rotary Clubs and by the Blairsville Garden Club. The camp will be held on the campus of the Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center and the dates for the camp are June 5 - 9, 2006. The mission of this summer camp is to expose young people at an early age to basic water quality science information that can be shared with all family members; to encourage the application of environmentally sound practices around the home; and to promote career opportunities in sciences to young people. Students will be utilizing scientific equipment indoors and along streamside to collect real data for an authentic environmental research experience as well as taking fieldtrips in the afternoons. Transportation will be provided by the UGA Cooperative Extension Service. To be eligible for the camp the student must be a sixth grader moving up to 7th grade, live in Fannin, Towns, or Union counties; and they must be recommended by their 6th grade science teacher. A draft schedule of events and a camp nomination brochure can be found on the Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition's website at www.hrwc.net or you may call Nicole Kelley at 837-5414 for more information. Nominations should be turned in by May 5, 2006. |
